Specialisation: Stringed-instrument Conservation

Title of project: Sounds from Silence: What are the Effective Options for Hearing Historic Musical Instruments?

My work deals with the practical and scientific conservation and restoration of historic stringed instruments of any age or origin, including early guitars, the violin family, lutes and historic banjos. Most can be restored as working instruments and used regularly in performances. Musical instruments in museums, however, are usually too rare or fragile to be played. My research addresses the methods and options available to enable us to hear those instruments without playing them. As well as new ways of capturing forms by high-tech imaging and reproducing instruments by 3D printing, modern technology offers 3D Laser-Doppler vibrometry and advanced digital sound-processing, which can be used to safely extract sound from a silent musical instrument.
