The multilayered complexity of an old building and the reminiscence of its past identity contribute to creating a unique atmosphere. The project focuses on this quality, while exploring the notion of converting the use of a heritage building.

My interest lies in interior design as the key to this complex process, considering atmosphere as a spatial quality that affects human perception.

The subject of the project is the Grade II listed Haggerston Baths. Operating as a pool from 1904 until 2000, it is currently vacant.

In the Victorian society, the urgency was for bathing facilities to be accessible to everyone. Today's socioeconomic Zeitgeist can be compared to the lack of individual space, which has become an everyday issue in contemporary overcrowded metropolis.

The alteration of a building with such a distinct historical and social identity requires sensitivity, imagination and the responsibility to balance its heritage restoration and the innovative transformation.

The pool is now a centre for performing arts and creative invention. Both a physical and conceptual space, it acts as a supportive platform where the next generation of creative talents can find motivation and collaboration across disciplines.

The value of physical space for performing artists is essential but it is becoming less and less accessible in central London.

The new scheme allows young performers to access a unique performance venue both day and night, affordable rehearsal spaces, interim accommodations for living and other related services for the development of their professional skills and artistic engagement.

The project aims to integrate the new functional design with the existing heritage, taking advantage of its special aura to create a unique experience for both the performer and the audience.

In particular, this idea of sensitive intervention drives the design strategy of the multipurpose venue, combined with the intention of providing a flexible space suitable for multiple scenarios such as performance, circus, concerts, fashion shows and exhibitions.

  • My interest in interior design lies in its transversal and multifaceted position, taking inspiration from many other design disciplines and arts. Interior design can affect people's everyday life while responding to social and commercial changes, tracing human stories and forecasting future scenarios. Moreover, it can generate special effects in a space, creating a powerful immersive experience.

"In the end, it is the climate of ephemeral effects that envelops the inhabitant, not the building. To enter a project is to enter an atmosphere. What is experienced is the atmosphere, not the object such as." Mark Wigley, Architecture of Atmosphere, 1998, p 18
