Synaesthesia Materialisation: Methods of Applying Synaesthesia within the Context of Design

This practice-based PhD research will identify how the idiosyncratic properties of synesthesia can be integrated within product design. The term synesthesia has been widely discussed by various scientific disciplines, including psychology, neuroscience and anatomy, and has been broadly used to capture and discover our mental images. This research will consider that extensive inputs of synesthesia have exceptional potentials that are capable of conceiving exciting new design outputs. The core objective of this study is to investigate this potential more rigorously and, in particular, to consider how the obscure properties of synesthesia can contribute and encourage innovation within the context of design.

  • Chang Hee Lee is a design engineer and researcher currently based in London. Using different products as mediums, he pursues a variety of design experimentations with the desire to broaden possible future design channels. His experiments in this field have led him to investigate a variety of sources such as synaesthesia, fictional gadgetry, immateriality, mental images, metaphors, neuroscience and so on. Most of his works are self-funded, but he also positively engages with relevant industry subsidized projects.

He is a graduate of Central Academy of Fine Arts and obtained his Masters in Design Critical Practice at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) under the supervision of Dr John Stevens and Dr Dan Lockton at the Royal College of Art (RCA) London.

Chang Hee Lee is one of the Design Council’s Ones to Watch: this list of the 70 most talented emerging designers in the UK was announced as part of the Design Council’s 70th anniversary celebrations. He is also one of Korean Future Leaders elected by the Overseas Korean Foundation (OKF).
