Hangashore

Hangashore is a collection of ropes and tools made to reflect seafaring equipment found in the three Maritime Provinces of Canada. They have been constructed using a combination of traditional rope work and unexpected textile processes, and with unconventional materials which draw reference to the industrial quality of modern fishing gear. The tools from which they are made have also been constructed and modified in order to better understand the intricate craft of marlinespike seamanship and how it relates to other textile construction techniques.

  • Carley is a Canadian designer-maker who aims to emphasize the versatility of craft processes, particularly in textile construction and its tools. Multiple methods are explored and combined to create new structures, and equipment is often created or adapted to realise her ideas.

Although her background is in weaving, Carley’s designs encompass an array of techniques including knitting and crochet, as well as traditional marlinespike. Having worked collaboratively on projects in product design, healthcare and wearable art, she enjoys pushing the boundaries of textiles and their applications.
