The Body in the Digital age / Beautification
In our consumer culture we are increasingly worried about our appearance. More and more we are building an identity on social media that is not real; trying to capture perfect moments. It affects not only the way people perceive us, but also our self perception. Our physical identity changes with the impact of the digital self. Aiming to be perfect. The era of selfies; the figure in a selfie is usually an idealised self that has been carefully created to be seen by others. Celebrity culture may be a powerful influence on attitudes to appearance; the remaking of the body, cosmetic surgery. We identify ourselves with two-dimensional images as our most permanent form of ‘value’. Our identities are becoming more and more like ‘human’ performances.Â
After all of these changes are we still human or are we moving towards something else?

I work experimentally with shapes and textures and a key driver for me in projects is to have a strong concept that still allows lots of room for an artistic nerve. I find that working in a field of contrasts is a great tool for me in projects and movement has an essential role in my work and research. My work evolves around the body; how we perceive ourselves and others in the digital age. I raise questions and awareness and evoke the questions in others through my textiles.Â
