Cyber Shadow : An Information Superhighway, Unilluminated

Cyber Shadow is a work of illustrative fiction and system design set in present-day Bangkok, where the space for freedom of information is strictly suppressed under the facade of 'Peace and Order'.

It follows a journey of ‘the Shadows’, a generation of high-tech literate, cyberpunk resistance journalists and activists, in forming an alternative, activist institution to facilitate ‘dark data’ (unclean information that is filtered by those in power). This institution is formed of bodies, devices and data, and activated in different physical spaces of the city. The journey seeks to illuminate and visualise [the physical] tangible elements of the internet and its role in shaping [the digital] intangible network and facilitates [information & data] transfer and internet resistance.

As part of the research journey, the project tunnels through time, geography and political conflicts to uncover modes of shadowed underground infrastructure for information transfer from the 1940s in Nazi-occupied Europe, to the 1960s during Southeast Asia’s communist insurgency, to today’s data haven.
