Anna Ogden-Smith

MA work

Anna Ogden-Smith's body of work spans across the moving image, graphic design and writing. For the past two years, she has been investigating the concept of boredom. Why have we become more and more distracted, alienated and restless when everything around us urges us not to be bored? While visually experimenting around the idea of finding 'something' out of 'nothingness', the process led to various interdisciplinary exercises, reflections, and interventions in an attempt to recuperate boredom.

Consoling Illusion(s) is a series of five short video-narratives exploring the shifting balance between the ordinary and the fictitious. The fragmented entries are banal re-visions of personal amateur footage, most of which were recorded in instances of waiting or out of boredom, with no prior intention to tell stories. Through the process of recording, hijacking and injecting new meanings into the trivial, these videos become visual and verbal correspondences that trigger whimsical associations. The viewer is thus invited to question his visceral preconceptions imposed by either language or stereotypical imagery.
