Mike Hoffman launches his 9ft tall rocket 'Bulletproof'

I investigated the East Anglian Rocketry Society after being disheartened by the inaccessible, high-end nature of space exploration. I wanted to see what the every-mans space travel looked like. Without knowing what to expect I stumbled across a fantastic community of rocketeers who worked together for the benefit of the group.

After numerous visits to the group I wrote a list of ethics, a code of conduct for EARS and consulted the group about them. The list was amended and taken forward, my job now was to embed these ideals and ethics into an object. I have developed a game with these ethics embedded within it.

Spring is a cooperative board game born from first hand experience of EARS, a genuinely collaborative environment cultivated from a High Risk - Low Competition scenario, in creating this game I have built a fiction that parallels this, allowing players to learn the ideals of a collaborative community themselves.

  • I take a heavily research based approach to design, I believe in embedding yourself in research, be that scientific study, material exploration or a group of people. Being immersed in this understanding helps to ask the right questions, design gives us the chance to create answers.
