Neo/ Post/ Colonial Exchange

The history of the relationship between South African and Britain is dark and complicated. In 'Neo/ Post/ Colonial Exchange' Amy Cornfield reflects on the history and changing relationship between the two countries. She uses familiar tropes to address the difficult topics of racism, identity, national heritage, authority and power.

Amy's approach is direct, interdisciplinary and political in nature. 'Neo/ Post/ Colonial Exchange' is a group of works comprising of print, sculpture, installation, moving image and interactive elements that together work to both present and explore the complexities of these concepts.

In her work Amy expresses the ambivalence she feels about her British heritage in relation to the colonial past that is still today so prevalent in the country of her birth, South Africa.

  • Amy Cornfield's work is socio-political commentary. Amy sees art as a form of communication. She believes in it's potential to elicit both thought and feeling, broaden horizons and challenge perceptions. Amy employs art as a tool for social change. Her work intends to pose questions, confront attitudes and create awareness.

Her work is drawn from the social, political and psychological environment in her home country, South Africa, and the happenings around her. Amy's practice is research based and reliant on records, be it drawing from existing archive or creating a new one through documentation.

Amy is interested in the viewer's response to her work and the threshold of how much information is needed to contextualise it. She challenges the social conventions of what can and can't be said. Her work evokes both an emotional and a cerebral response.
