Tous N'attendent Que D'être Vivant, All Are Waiting But To Be Alive, Sedoyo Nenggo Gesang Malih

The installation is composed of multiple objects through which the composition is inspired by the Gamelan, a traditional Indonesian ensemble. With the Javanese Gamelan, the idea of nothingness is materialized by silence. Often during an intense set, the sound stops so that Gods can come to use the territory created by the ‘music’. The distance between each element and its place are both fundamental. The notion of Territory is directly linked to the concept of 'speaking': words on their own make a space the same way the Gamelan does with music.

During the degree show four readings will reveal/open this space, performers and objets are the instruments.

  • Familiar with the flux and porosity of identity, Amalia Laurent tackles topographic, geographical and cartographic themes that are both real and fantastical. The predominance of textiles and prints in her artistic practice highlights the wide palette of a dual culture as well as an inherent confrontation between history and stories. By using a vocabulary of familiar forms, archaic references and primitive techniques, she develops a practice that feeds on a personal, familial, ancestral memory and a collective memory, that borrows from history, archeology and founding myths. Her history, unfolding in imaginary countries, draws us into unknown territories. Amalia’s craft and textile work questions the use of tools and materials as much as the philosophical relationship to ancestors and the afterlife and transmission of ideas through society’s collective memory. The mastery of these techniques is then brought into dialogue with that of contemporary printing and technology.
