Allan Struthers

MA work

Organizational Aesthetics 1

An interest in subcultures, capitalist ideology and revolutionaryish ways of thinking has spurred Struthers to facilitate new promotional campaigns for: Ted Zenith's Media Dietitian Training Centre and Stanley Silverdale's Relevance Recovery Unit.

In this show, Struthers presents a selection of documents from the time he spent with both of these most welcome guests, allowing them space and patience that few others would.

In doing so, he has managed to find subjects likely to amuse and frustrate in equal measure, as they express their unconventional-yet-barely-out-of-place aspirations with an avuncular bombast that is matched only by their lachrymose fragility.

  • I make satirical writing and performance-based work.

I'm interested particularly in how participation in social organisations and institutions might contribute to producing images and ideas that are antagonistic to the interests of capital and the state. I use art as a site in which to practice performative and rhetorical strategies of resistance, safely.

When developing work, I try to be mindful of ideological conflicts and the potential unintended effects of criticism, whilst making art that consciously reflects the material conditions in which it is produced.

There are of course limits to this.
