Bellwether

This project is a personal response to social media following one simple question that was put to me – 'Dad, can I get Instagram?'

I only use social media for design related things, I've never really looked into it. Never really got my head around it. but now my daughter wants in on it.

So I look, and what I see are people replicating the same style images, same stories, trying to fit into the same boxes. Taking elements and signifiers from broader narratives to help build their own stories, suit their own needs, their ego. Individuals focussed on building their own persona. Very two-dimensional narcissistic egos, like avatars, icons that have no real depth or substance.

Everywhere I see people creating changing narratives, telling different stories, trying to appeal to different swarms of people. This all gets amplified, magnified, the way things tend to do online, resulting in the loss of definition of the person and who they really are.

So it's this narrative, this focus, which I have adapted into the creation of the lenses used to create these videos. All videos are created in-camera and are purely a result of the custom lenses.
