  • My work is focused on natural forms and the possibility of discovering relationships outside of aesthetic structures, such as geometry or science. I am attempting to couple the phenomena of things that are simply present, with those things that are determinate modes of knowledge as a way of exercising potentiality. Thus, I am attempting to open out the perspective latent within things that might be causally encountered. This is stimulated in part by the notion that the world of art is, or functions as if, it is a network or even an apparatus that joins disparate things together. Rather than the investment in determinate outcomes I am looking for gaps that might be opened in order to pass through, occasioning in the process a view or event of that passage. Rocks, branches, insects, bones, bark then are in some way marked not only by naming but also by mathematical theorems named after animals. Thus, the studio becomes a labyrinth of things that are categorised in different ways. So material things mix with abstractions. For instance, I never make work solely about nature but instead about ideas of nature, never about things but again ideas we might have about things. Therefore my work functions like a series of trace events that are spliced together out of materials, voices, ideas, desires and symptoms requiring a figuring out because it is either a network or labyrinth.
