Ornamentation

I am interested in the translation of Parisian architecture into a textile surface. When you apply decoration to a flat surface it shifts from something that is read as one-dimensional to three-dimensional.

Visual inspiration for my collection is taken from the Galerie d’Apollon in The Louvre, Paris. Exploring rich and densely worked surfaces, the notion of ‘excess’ translates into my own personal aesthetic of making and the opulent and luxurious materials I choose to work with.

Through the means of leather, silk-satin, and digital embroidery, I have created a series of quilted fabrics for fashion. These grounds have then been reworked with three-dimensional beading techniques, exploring Swarovski crystal components and gold-work relief to capture the essence of traditional Parisian décor but in a contemporary context.

  • Through the act of research and trialing my work features a series of playful techniques juxtaposing ‘traditional’ textiles with a contemporary perspective.

My current practice explores the notion of ‘excess’- something that I feel reflects my personal aesthetic/approach towards making. The opulent techniques and luxurious materials that I choose to work with address the themes of ornamentation and decoration within Parisian architecture.

I am interested in the translation of Parisian architecture into a textile surface. When you apply decoration to a flat surface it shifts from something that is read as one-dimensional to three-dimensional. Currently, through the means of leather, silk-satin, digital embroidery, but most importantly three-dimensional hand-work such as beading and goldwork, I create fabrics for fashion catered to the couture market.
