Tim Miller’s work explores the performativity of the individual and objectification for designed improvement. Through exploring the dramatisation and commodification of the individual within societal contexts, design can simultaneously contribute towards and analyse the process of self-improvement through accelerating this process further.
‘Interview in Progress’ explores the dramatisation of individuals within job interview scenarios. Through working with a corporate role play company, a forum-theatre model has been developed whereby individuals are trained in the dramatisation of answers to standard job interview questions, aided by screenwriters and fiction directors. Through heightening the drama inherent in job interview answers, individuals are aided in obtaining employment through a process of self-transformation, commodification and dramatisation.
‘Covers’ explores the act of self-presentation, both through text and performance. Actors applying for the role of ‘interviewee’ are asked to perform their cover-letters in front of the camera. Throughout the film, a dialogue between the ‘real’ and ‘acted’ self is made apparent as the actors fluctuate between acting and the breaking of the act.
