The Epic in the Intimate
The starting point for 'The Epic in the Intimate' was the concept of scale. Often asked if she had thought of working bigger, Phoebe decided to focus on the idea of ‘epic’, but an epic of scope rather than material size. Our emotions can take on epic proportions which are often hidden from those outside of ourselves. They are sprawling messy complicated journeys with no end. She therefore has set out to transcribe personal emotional events into twelve chapters: Twelve sculptures that combine materials and poses of the female body to evoke these experiences.

As an artist I seek to explore our internal narratives. For me these experiences are quite physical, grounded in my body. It is through my body that I perceive, remember, and react to the world. I therefore set out to transcribe these internal experiences into physical objects; evoking the emotions through the materials and poses of my sculptures. I find the process of making them has a meditative quality, grounding me when my thoughts become too chaotic. Their small, hand-held, scale makes problems manageable and suits the intimate subjects they address. Rather than shouting, their size is an invitation to come closer and engage with their world.
