Dérive - Inkpots
Excited by mainly formal abstracted elements, shape, line and colour are first and foremost the source of inspiration for this body of work. The interplay between surface and form, the relationship of the turned edge to the primitive mark, the ways in which colours exist side by side, provide infinite ways in which materials can be transformed into rich, visceral and personally expressive individual statements. Creating multiples of these objects allows for them to be used in various combinations, delivering a visually powerful and exciting installation.Â
Intuitive mark making, combined with careful deliberation and intention on simple forms, provides a satisfying and solid making process; allowing for the spontaneous to sit beside the considered. This builds an exciting visual language, one that leaves the objects open to interpretation by the viewer.Â

Thoughts, emotions, images, sounds, gestures, looks, words and smells; some with hidden meaning others delivered with no thought, constantly surround everyday life, and to a greater extent go unnoticed and are quickly forgotten.Â
My work insists that I walk emotional pathways and confront unwanted feelings; fear, isolation, pain, helplessness and spontaneously respond to them by creating physical ceramic objects that represent the psychological response to these hidden emotional locations.
Influenced by abstract works, historic English slipware and the base element of clay, my work combines these ingredients into unique one off objects that remain open to interpretation by the viewer.
