FreshTag, Rui Xu 2019
pH sensitive biofilm
30cm*30cm
Major project:
FreshTag
Food waste is a major issue in society. It is not only an economic concern, but also depletes the environment of limited natural resources. FreshTag is an innovative tool to reduce food waste and avoid undesirable reactions, especially in human health and wellbeing.
Rui Xu is developing a natural pH sensitive dye system that can be applied to smart packaging. The crucial aspect in this packaging system is the change of the generic 'best before' and 'use by' dating mechanism – she propose switching to a dynamic monitoring system. FreshTag can offer information about the food and environmental conditions in real-time, and detect and indicate food freshness through colour change. This means adopting FreshTag can lead to a packaging system becoming more efficient and sustainable.
