Major project:
Can you see my toes?
Can you see my toes? is an ongoing exploration of the perceptions and preconceptions related to the body. Lucy’s body becomes a drawing tool and point of reference throughout the making. Approaching things that are uncomfortable for her, focusing on what she regards as ‘problem areas’ and translating them through various media; video, screen-printing, and sculpture.
To Lucy, exploring tactile materials in her prints and sculptures influenced her to inject humour into a sensitive subject – pushing and pulling between the grotesque and the beautiful.
Moving video and imagery became a focus within the development and experimentation process that Lucy developed while at the Royal College of Art, using her body as a tool to create drawings, objects, prints and imagery. Deliberately making the frame for them out of materials that can be recycled, and easily dismantled, in order to mimic the movement and flexibility of the body, and capture the original movement in the video. They are a slow performance piece among themselves.

Lucy Oates is a multi-disciplinary artist based in London. Working predominantly in print, textiles, and sculpture. Her practice addresses both social and personal subject matters, focusing heavily on the human body and waste material.
Lucy prides herself on her understanding of colour and composition. Her work often deploys parts that individually can stand alone, but together create installations. There are no limits or rules in Lucy’s practice – her use of unconventional methods and materials often leads her on to great journeys of experimentation, often combining traditional techniques with the digital. Process is key in her practice.
