My work maps the changing sowing patterns in the fields, which surround me in Dorset. As I walk I also map my own pathway; the walking becomes meditative and ritualistic. Out of these parallel sequences of experience comes my work – exploring the relationship between the fragility and strength of the landscape.Â
The journey is where I pay attention, both outward and inward. I translate my sketches into surface and pattern, through experimenting with different papers, threads, print, weave and stitch. I record the sowing patterns through mark making with cones, sticks and thistles gathered on the walk; using my own ink make from locally foraged walnuts. By introducing walnut wood to acrylic, I reflect my love of the natural with the unnatural. From that conjunction I begin to find something random, disruptive and playful in the landscape.
This experience comes with me into the studio, and generates my appreciation of the bespoke, which then will take creative form as printed textiles, wallpaper and furniture.
