Dissertation:

XHealth Lab

XHealth Lab is a futures research facility setup within the Royal College of Art Show 2019. To design for futures, I see my role as a stage designer for co-speculative design – to stage participation in the generation of futures visions. XHealth Lab is an interactive set for visitors to experience co-speculative design for health futures, in space.

Info

  • As a design researcher, Steph’s practice is about facilitating the generation of futures visions. She explores the development and use of playful futures research methods to generate alternative and preferable futures in high-risk high-uncertainty contexts, such as healthcare and/or space.

Her dissertation on Designing for Healthcare in Space is a practice-led research project. The future of healthcare in space faces significant changes in demographics and destinations. Which healthcare challenge should the efforts be directed to, given the limited resources? Through the practice of 12 participatory speculative design activities (e.g. design game and design improv workshops), the designer explores methodologies to facilitate co-imagination beyond the probable futures. As well as generating imaginative futures, the research also explores ‘useful’ speculative design.
