Major project:
Her Voice in Movement
“HER VOICE IN MOVEMENT” is a migration stories project which aims at sharing women migrants’ stories to the next generations. This project started from an animation which depicts stories of my family, my grandmother and my mother. It further reaches and relates to people with similar experience through storytelling workshops and sharing in different places.
Storyline: The three generations of my family have experienced migration and movement. My grandmother was a Malaysian Chinese who moved to China due to anti-Chinese riot. However, she rarely talked about her past. She was a silent and gentle grandmother in my eyes. Similarly, my mother also moved to another city because of historical incidents when she grew up. She tends to take action and speak out for herself.
Whilst touching their photos found in the family album, I was thinking about
the lives of these ordinary women – my grandmother and my mother - who have lived
through a historical change. I found their stories so relatable because I am
also going through some similar situations at present.

I am an illustrator and visual artist. I was born in Macau, which is a tiny city with its more than 400 years of colonial history. I started to explore my social identity during the city’s handover from a colony to a special administrative region; particularly the days I studied and lived in various cities and overseas, struggling with conflict and harmony.
One day, I came across a photo taken of my grandmother and mother, I found out this photo was taken in the year that my mother got married - before I was even born. Since then I was curious about my family personal history as well as cultural identities, which inspired a series of work to reflect the relationships between generations in my family. My practice concerns storytelling and my daily life, this was the starting point of my journey about personal history and collective memories. Currently, such studies and life experience led me to my ongoing project about women migrants. I’m starting from the tiny stories of my family again and intending to broaden it to a wider background. I believe that it’s a universal topic which is worth spreading and discussing today.
I'm exploring how to extract the visual stories from everyone’s unique cultural background.
