Accentuate
Sorry, I didn’t quite get that? Has a voice assistant not recognised your accent before? In 2053- Alexa, Google home and Siri have increased in every home, and as a result the UK has lost their accents.
Based on the British Library Voice Archives, this short film looks at themes of UK classism. It also speculates about how our behaviour could be controlled by advancing technology. Looking at accents as a means for a larger discussion, the film creates a fictional narrative to expand and highlight the current prejudice that comes from first initially meeting a person.
An installation set in 2053 in a small pocket of the UK on the south coast. The short film follows a couple still speaking with accents holding onto their identities through nostalgia, in a society homogenised by voice recognition. The installation invites the viewer into their living room.

Bethany is a multidisciplinary environment designer, specialising in architectural concept design. While at the Royal College of Art Bethany has been experimenting with film, 3D/digital painting, and projection mapping. In her final year she worked with data from the British Library, developing a fictional narrative to expand her storytelling and production skills. Coming from a background in Interior and Spatial design, and with a strong traditional drawing portfolio. Bethany's practice is currently moving towards combining moving image, architectural drawing and 3D environments.
