Major project:

New Logics of Collectivity: Working in Canada Water

As London’s economy becomes driven by knowledge work, the project reconceptualises workspaces and infrastructures for the professional service industries in Canada Water, South London. Challenging the deep-plan core-and-shell blocks that constitute contemporary workspace products in urban developments, the project proposes a reinterpretation of the office block as one that recognises diverse forms, scales, and temporal structures of knowledge-based work. The strategy of the project is formed as an apparatus for London’s small-scale organisations and individuals in the professional industries to operate as part of the city’s economic centre. Furthermore, the project uses an examination the relationship between work environments and activities of domestic care and labour, such that it reestablishes protocols of work that preclude creating gendered subjectivities of breadwinner and caregiver. In doing so, it questions the understanding of the office typology as a space limited to work production, rethinking the formation of protocols in relation to alternate practices and logics of care and domestic activities within new logics of collectivity.
