Major project:

Seaweed Futures

Seaweed Futures proposes a 'Seaweed Commonage' for the rural dwellers of Connemara, Ireland as a way to secure a seaweed commonage for 250 local seaweed harvesters to pass their coastline down through the generations and make use of the abundant resource of seaweed in an economic and environmentally sustainable way.

The seaweed walk takes you through the Laminaria Gardens to see how semi-exposed species are turned to liquid fertilisers and alginate is extracted to create bioplastics, freshen up at the Fucus Baths for a modern take on the Irish seaweed baths and the Sea Moss Kitchen to try new recipes using the harvests from the sheltered coasts.

C.S.C. hopes to provide an alternative to the commodification of the seaweed from large businesses through encouraging research and fabrication of small scale but high value end products that promotes environmental consciousness for visitors and sustainable economic growth.
