Major project:
Dereliction Translation
Ruins in our everyday comprehension bring to mind ancient monuments like Machu Picchu or Angkor Wat. In Hong Kong, there’s no monuments as such, but its inhabitants, especially the younger generation, yearn for monuments that will remind them of a material past — one that is being rapidly erased, as buildings deemed obsolete are demolished and replaced by the new and shiny.
The project interrogates the city's pervasive assumption of the problem of decay, which is often conveniently hijacked to victimise older but functioning buildings and rationalise the perpetual drive for profit and modernity – could dereliction inform a new architectural design language?
