Major project:

Unmonument

I am inspired by Kurt Schwitters and the Merz, the destruction and reconstruction of fragments collaged together to form a whole. The columns I have been making are made up of these fragments, where sculpture is not fixed to a single form but there is a possibility of transformation. The monumental becomes temporal through these transformations and performative acts of destruction, displacing the expectations of the concrete materials and architectural form.

Info

  • The making and unmaking process is an integral part of my work, re-constructing the properties of the sculpture and material to question its function and relationship to space. Working with constructive and recycled materials, I create sculptural assemblages that have an architectural resemblance with a raw sense of formation.

I find myself responding to sites associated with demolition, either abandoned, degrading or under renovation. Considering permanence and the ephemeral, I create situations where my sculptures are either suggestive of a form of destruction or are gradually being destroyed in the process of making. Fragments of previous sculptures become the aggregate for the next, the structural integrity ruined before it is made.
