Show RCA 2019

Olivia Rowland

Show RCA work

Major project:

Upchuck / What's Up Duck

My degree show installation comprises a multi-disciplinary project spanning printmaking and moving image.

The print series (combining screen print and plate lithography) isolates singular moments, characters and narratives from the process of automatic drawing whilst the three animated shorts incite half-playful, half-violent metamorphosis of forms.

The presence of the drawn mark (and the fluid stream-of-consciousness) is integral to the work. It both stutters and self-parodies, unfolding mimetically to reveal fictional characters, fantasies, semi-autobiographical anecdotes and snatched female tropes contemporary and classical.

Info

  • At the crux of my practice is the process of compulsive drawing to navigate self-narration, identity and dialogue.

I focus specifically upon the notion of articulation as a form of labour. I am interested in how channels of communication are distorted by intersecting issues of gender, anxiety and our shifting perceptions of ‘authentic’ experience.

My drawings comprise a compulsive and quasi-performative gesture: one that is not aware of its destination at the outset. Written narrative surfaces in the form of repetitive inner monologue, wordplay and anecdote. Printmaking and animation function as final realisations for this process.

My work operates on both the politics of visibility and the process of catharsis. Crucially, it remains both playful and humorous; however darkly or satirically so.
