Home is a space, a discussion for identity, memory, history, family and placement associating to, or excluding of, time. My work is derived from personal and public space, inspired by my upbringing in post-conflict Northern Ireland. Correlating works manifest through an intimate understanding of my upbringing and surroundings, in affinity to childhood memory and national identity. The work embodies a permanence imbued with memory that bears traces of an abject reality. Exposing a plethora of thought and emotion around identity and division to which those brought up around violence could relate. I explore the simplicity of shape and symbols to impart metaphor and narrative through prints and DIY sculptural works which form an intricate relationship. The scale is intimate, archetypal to question ownership and vulnerability.

I aim to create an environment, a protest and territorialism of space to play on the privatised and segregated. The presence of absence displays a double temporality of subject, a subtle confrontation which shows as much of an internal conflict as an external conflict. Fragility of coextensive objects make up spaces between states of being and becoming, both to hide and expose truth alongside the movement of time. Concepts of austerity, conflict and identity within the 'home' relate beyond my own experience and to a wider social and cultural context.


  • I grasp at the past, present and future in an attempt to capture a moment in time. Uncertainty, the familiar and experience form the crux of my practice. Work is derived through an intimate understanding of my upbringing and childhood memory which is informed by my post-conflict Northern Irish identity. Surroundings, space, public and private form the basis of my investigation, particularly the urban and domestic. My cathartic means of working displays a time that once was, or never has been. The work plays with reinterpreting memory, whether it is my own or based on tales and dreams. I ask myself what is real and what is not while constructing a narrative through 2D and 3D objects, prints and installation.
