Desova, the loss of what has been earned while gambling
Desova is a Portuguese word that has multiple meanings and lends its vigour to this film. It is the process of displacement – of being forced to move; it is the salmon finding its way back to the rivers where it was born, to lay its eggs. Against all odds, it is Dona Alice at the age of 93, returning to Portugal for the first time after 87 years in Brazil – to perform her own choreography of Ravel’s Bolero.
