Major project:

A Well Trained Eye

A Well Trained Eye is a series of printed works that seek to question how particular visual and textual languages frequently associated with truth-telling (such as instructional texts, diagrams or photographs) are used to validate subjective narratives. The works included draw on a variety of source material, including stock images, canonical painting, early photographic manuals and scientific diagrams. Materials vary from CNC routed Valchromat to bespoke frames and vinyl decals.

Info

  • Working with found contemporary and historic material, Ellie explores the roles that producers and mediators have in shaping our relationships to seemingly neutral or informative material. She is interested in how visual and textual frameworks can facilitate belief systems, such as the cult of celebrity, the unbridled power of science or conspiracy theories. Working from sources that purport objectivity, Ellie uses details, crops and textual fragments to point out absurdities and biases.

Printmaking is integral to these concepts around the fabrication and distribution of knowledge and opinion. The prints Ellie creates often become components of larger installations, shown alongside digital prints, vinyl decals or objects. Her use of prints and their associated histories alongside other materials introduces dialogues around ephemerality, information aesthetics and advertising.
