Show RCA 2019

Noura Alserkal

Show RCA work

Major project:

An Unread Letter to My Mother

The work is a physical, unspoken conversation with my mother and addresses ways to connect and communicate with her on topics I wasn't ever able to. It explores notions of sensuality and femininity that question ideas of value and time. Using materials that connect to my identity and culture, some of which are pearls and dkhoon (incense), in order to question what it means to be a woman.

Info

  • To what extent does adornment and jewellery speak about the wearer? Does it say anything or nothing at all? Through my work, I begin to unpack these questions by reestablishing what jewellery means to my identity and culture by using materials such as dkhoon (incense) and fabrics to create a narrative that questions value and desirability.

Noura is from the United Arab Emirates. She won the RCA x Swarovski Design Project in 2018 and gave a design talk among other artists in Wattens, Austria. In 2015, she was part of the Dubai–Berlin Exchange Program where four Emirati jewellery designers and four Berlin designers were chosen to create work and be part of an exhibition titled Dubai Berlin Fashion Show. She was also part of the Cultural Excellence Fellowship organised by ADMAF and the British Council.
