Dissertation:
Defining London Fashion, 1980–2018: Identity, Spectacle, Subversion
London has long been considered a fashion capital, playing host to a major fashion week and originating many world-famous designers. In an increasingly globalised fashion industry, it is timely to consider the meaning of London fashion, querying how much of it is tied to nationality. This dissertation identifies and analyses key tropes associated with London fashion, focusing in particular on the inherent themes of Anglomania, DIY and Spectacle. It also questions the longevity of such a system, analysing job sector data alongside the evolving art college system. The study presents these sections alongside an analysis of fashion communication, positing an inherent link between the contemporary understanding of London fashion and printed media.
