Info

  • Mathias Hartmann’s work explores sound and image interactions focusing on musical narratives. Drone sounds, chord progressions or dynamics suggest a place, feeling or materiality. Informed by his education as musician and occupation with pop culture, his practice is situated between narration and documentation, still and moving image. Connections between sound and image are made through text and musical figures. While his practice can be considered as a reaction to his immediate environment, the work often appears palimpsest-like and resembles visual notes, song texts or poetry. Layer, repetition, materiality or texture is inherent in sound and image. These tensions between sound and image lead to different visual and textual forms.
