Show RCA work

Major project:

Unauthorised Material

Installation, archival and audio material, single channel video.

Unauthorised Material is a project based on my correspondence with an inmate serving his sentence in a US prison. The installation includes five objects that were sent back to me from prison alongside documents listing the items that are forbidden to post to inmates. In the audio material, a voice is narrating from our correspondence whilst the single channel video presents my response to the prisoner’s voice through my continuous breathing. The videography is by Manuela Batas.

Realised in collaboration with the inmate, Unauthorised Material explores the idea of two voices, one incarcerated and one free, engaging in performative acts of shared memory. Starting from the objects that are classified as ‘Material Returned’ and through the mechanisms of breathing and language, this work investigates the connection between literal and self-imposed prison.
