Show RCA 2019

Joseph Gabriel

Show RCA work

Major project:

Detritus

Exploring notions of residual and material accumulation, much of my concerns have been influenced by moving into an environment where I associate seasonal transition with sentimentality. Looking at detritus and ephemeral matters found in nature, I approach my work as an attempt to reify, memorialise and enliven, what would otherwise be considered as trivial remains.

Working with clay as a substrate for markings and immediate gestural traces, I investigate how this visual language could articulate the tension between what was left behind, and a sense of renewal — taking reference from dereliction and fragmented pieces, trying to find a coherent whole.

Info

  • Joseph Gabriel is a visual artist from the Philippines, whose artistic practice spans from drawing, sculpture and installation. Through his works, he investigates notions of land, origin, memory, and sense of place. Using materials that are inherently fragile, visually delicate or in the state of transformation, his works explore the duality of nature and artifice.
