Risja Steeghs

Show RCA work

Major project:

I See Sheets of Me

I See Sheets of me is an installation of several textile works hanging in space by Risja Steeghs. Interested in the idea of the body as a universal landscape, the artist created several works representing different layers of the body's journey becoming space. Especially focussing on the moment in between wake and sleep where we become aware of our body's presence, our sensations and our material form in space.

The artist has spend her time at the Royal College of Art working and researching on the bed as an extension of the body and a metaphor for incessant rebirth. She is interested in creating works which evoke a similar intimate and haptic relationship as we have when we find ourselves in the safe space of our bedroom.

The works will be activated through small performative acts by the artist herself on the PV.   Through use of projections, water and oil, she breathes life into the textile pieces, so that they become living sculptures in space.

Performances happen June 21, 6-8 throughout and July 1st, 6-8 throughout

Info

  • Risja Steeghs is an artist working along the lines of sculpture, installation and performance. Her work focusses on the bed as a metaphor for the body’s becoming and its incessant qualities of rebirth. Within her work she explores notions of transformation, rebirth and how we as humans occupy space in this world using textile and her own body as main materials in her practice.

She is interested in creating artwork and spaces which evoke a haptic, soft and sensuous relationship between viewer and artwork, often inviting them to enter personal spaces or putting herself in vulnerable states in front of an audience.
