This project is an exploration on the unexploited properties of the rattan cane and its utilization in dynamic furniture applications.
The Gandia dynamic chair is a response to a demand for a less technical office furniture which blends within the habitat, born out of the blurring between home and work environments. The warmth of rattan and the embracing shapes evoke a relaxed feel-at-home mood, while the innovative connections and material processing support the dynamic nature of sitting, in order to avoid stress and tension much associated with long working hours.
With this project I intend to challenge how rattan furniture can look, behave and feel, with the goal of giving more opportunities to the manufacturer by opening doors to new markets, those where quality and good design are equally appreciated, and also to support the preservation of this craft and the continuity of rattan furniture factories.

Andrea Mestre is a research led product designer from Spain. She focuses in designing thoughtful and functional products that facilitate the creation of meaningful relationships between people and objects.
Her practice is based around an understanding of manufacturing processes and material experimentation combined with an intuitive approach to colour and a keen eye for detail. Her projects never start with an empty page; fascination with a material, technique or colour always form the foundation for her work.
Guided by intuition and a hands-on approach, she aims to create beautiful and purposeful products that enable meaningful experiences which nourish the soul.
