The Future of Retail Design

A three-day design intensive exploring the forces shaping the retail environment of the future.

This three-day intensive programme will give spatial design professionals a framework for using design research methods to develop their practice-based research.

Participants will be stretched far beyond the traditional browsing-and-transaction language of retail, to learn how to design intellectually compelling, emotionally profound and visually inspiring ‘experiences’ for fashion retail design.

Commercial interior design is fast-moving, and intrinsically linked to the leading edge of contemporary popular culture – fashion, music and the visual arts.

High street interior design reflects and responds to cultural change and must evolve rapidly to meet current trends and desires. We will explore strategies for innovation through:

  • showcasing radical tactics used by leading retail brands
  • identifying how hybridising technologies with tactile interiors increase immersive engagement
  • exploring how innovations from across architecture and interior design disciplines could be transposed into retail design
  • considering immersive strategies from other spatial sectors – from museums to smart-homes – and consider how these could be appropriated as a means to enhance and expand the possibilities of retail.

What will I learn?

The programme has been carefully designed to stimulate both conceptual and practical thinking, helping you gain practical knowledge, provoking discussion and inspiration, and developing industry advancement skills within a supportive and creative learning environment.

In particular, you will learn:

  • how to research and question current retail practice that might lead to testing, rethinking and reworking the retail experience in a short design project
  • creative and conceptual thinking relating to popular culture
  • translating ideas into real space
  • planning and thinking about customer experience

  • the principles of designing experientially compelling concessions, 
point of sales
, display storage, window display and lighting
  • how to engage your customers by using advanced design communication in spatial environments
  • insight into the best global practice in retail design
  • experience in critical, creative and insightful thinking
  • skills that enable you to return to your practice with greater ability to creatively innovate and connect to retail design trends.
How will I learn?

This intensive masterclass will blend lectures, workshops and seminars with 1:1 consultation sessions, design reviews with renowned retail designers and visits to some of London’s most radical retail environments.

  • opportunities to network with visiting retail designers and your designer peers on the programme.

Who should attend?

This course is highly suited to design creatives across the disciplines interested in producing innovative and immersive retail design experiences, informed by future trends.

In particular: designers (interiors, architecture, retail), stylists, commercial design practitioners, retail industry professionals and retail enthusiasts, user-experience designers, merchandise designers and exhibition designers.

Programme team

This course will be delivered by staff from the RCA's School of Architecture: Architecture, Interior Design and Postgraduate Research Programmes.

Dr Harriet Harriss is a Senior Tutor in Architecture and Interior Design at the Royal College of Art, and an award-winning designer, ideation facilitator and author.

Harriet’s workshops and hackathons are strongly informed by design-thinking intelligence, data-driven future trends and real-world innovation experience. Harriet’s expertise in cross-disciplinary ideation gives her a unique insight into the way people communicate and innovate within the workplace. Her problem-based, interdisciplinary expertise enables her to build bridges between organisations and sectors that facilitate innovative partnerships and new market opportunities, as well as enrich and often reboot organisational strategies.

Harriet’s design background enables her assist clients in envisioning a diverse range of outcomes: from technologies and products to spaces and service strategies – using ideation methodologies to help executives, managers and teams overcome the blocks that prevent innovation. Harriet’s creativity, authenticity and passion can bring out the innovator inside of all of us.

Past clients include VISA, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Accenture, HSBC, BFI, ITV, Bankinter, Pfizer, Barclays, Fujitsu, SAP, HMRC, WSP Group, Mindshare and the Design Council.

Steve Jensen is tutor in Interior Design at the Royal College of Art and an accomplished spatial designer from east London with a portfolio of retail spaces for brands as diverse as Vivienne Westwood, Oswald Boateng and Nike. He has worked and been published throughout the world, winning the Canon Blueprint Retail Interior of the Year and the ICA Toshiba Arts and Innovation Award.

Olga Reid is a Visiting Tutor in Interior Design at the Royal College of Art. With an extensive portfolio of practical projects for Urban Salon, Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Event Communications, Olga has focused on narrative environments, emerging materials, graphics, digital drawing and 3D visualisation software as a creative tool. She has also contributed to a wide range of interior design books on commercial sectors.

Admission criteria

Participants must demonstrate:

  • professional experience working in retail design or a related design field and/or an undergraduate design/creative qualification
  • a good level of English language

Participants are encouraged to bring along any research idea they have already – regardless of how tentative – to make the most of developing these through the expert tutoring available during the course.
