Designing Informative Experiences in Mixed & Virtual Reality
This short course for non-technical beginners explores how the latest Virtual Reality (VR) technologies can be used to experience data in bodily ways that audiences will find novel and memorable.
Introducing the inventive history of mixed reality experiences, the course explores how that can be extended to information visualisation using current Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies and workflows.
The course will open with a review of key concepts and workflow strategies including charts, diagrams and information visualisation techniques for flat screens and print. Having mastered these development tools, the course will progress to data sculpture and Virtual Reality, where these numerical relationships are experienced meaningfully through size, shape, feel, depth and time.
As well as providing learning from industry experts about practical experiences of using AR/VR, the course will provide hands-on experience with AR/VR tools, equipment and workflows including Unity, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear, and Google’s Tilt Brush.
The course is suitable for creative directors who wish to understand how to apply VR and AR to their studios or projects; product designers, graphic designers, theatre professionals and artists who wish to broaden the creative possibilities of their practice; and in-house R&D teams, students and researchers who are looking for new directions.

What will I learn?
Participants will experience a range of VR and AR technologies and learn new concepts and skills, including:
- exploring the rich history of virtual and augmented reality from the past to the cutting-edge present
- understanding the basic concepts and jargon of AR/VR
- gaining experience with current AR/VR tools and workflows like Unity, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear, and Google’s Tilt Brush
- experiencing the possibilities of mixed reality (AR/VR) for communicating and experiencing different types of data using creative sensory design exercises
- learning from experts about their practical experiences of using AR/VR in their work.
How will I learn?
This course uses a blend of inspirational presentations and guest lectures from VR experts alongside hands-on guided workshops, site visits, demonstration sessions providing examples and project work to give participants first-hand experience of the possibilities of VR.
Over 3 days, participants will learn through:

Evan Raskob is an experienced interactive artist, consultant, and educator. Currently, Evan is a first-year tutor on the MA Design Products Programme at the RCA and runs the Mixed Reality Design theme, exploring VR/AR and product design. He also works part-time on an Arts and Computational Technology. Evan completed his PhD on ‘liveness in computational design’ at Goldsmiths, University of London, looking at 3D printing, VR/AR and machine learning.
Evan has worked for the past decade on installations, concerts, live performances, and fine art. His private industry teaching experience and course development includes 72AndSunny, BBH, Barclays, Ogilvy, Samsung). Evan helped devise and run the BA Computer Games Arts programme at University of the Creative Arts; taught on the MA Experience Design at Kingston University; and designed and led the BA Design Products and BA Design & Coding courses at Ravensbourne University.
