New for Old

Project Team:

Project Leader: Judith Mottram
Researcher: Jemma Ooi
Exhibition Curator: Martina Margetts

New for Old is a residency programme run by the RCA in partnership with the British Council. The aim of the project is to provide refreshed opportunities for the Southeast Asian craft sector and particularly support female artisans working in this field.

As part of the programme activities, the six RCA students, accompanied by Jemma Ooi, attended the Craft Reveals conference, organised by the British Council as part of Chiang Mai Design Week 2016.

Professor Judith Mottram, Dean of the School of Material, and Jemma Ooi, print tutor on the School of Material’s Textiles programme, undertook a scoping visit to weaving communities in Thailand in 2015. The following year six RCA students undertook residencies as members of 3 multidisciplinary teams working in Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. The teams, which also included anthropologists, social entrepreneurs and local guides, collected evidence and information about the field sites’ cultural contexts that related to traditional craftsmanship practice. The material gathered during these residencies will be showcased in an exhibition curated by Martina Margetts (RCA Senior Tutor in Critical & Historical Studies) taking place during London Craft Week in May 2017.
