Jewellery & Metal

Head of programme

Professor Hans Stofer
Professor Hans Stofer

At the centre of Jewellery & Metal is a deep-rooted passion and need to engage with materials, transforming them into meaningful things for people. Our belief in objects as embodiments of thinking demands from each student that they find their own angle on the subject and that through their work they find their own position and professional voice

Following my MA in Womenswear, also at the Royal College of Art, I have worked in the fashion industry for around eight years. I’ve done catwalk stuff with Matthew Williamson and John Rocha, and projects for Sonia Rykiel and Louis Vuitton, and so on.

I did my BA in Germany, where I’m from, at a very small university in Idar-Oberstein that focuses solely on jewellery – so it’s totally different from the Royal College of Art in that respect. It was the Trier University of Applied Sciences’ Gemstone and Jewellery Design department.

Previously, I studied Fashion Management at Amsterdam Fashion Institute and started working in PR. I was already in London by the time I applied to the RCA. I’d always wanted to do something more creative and make stuff, and knew this would be around body adornment – things that you’d like to wear

I studied as a historian at UCL from 2003-6, undergraduate, and then did an MA part-time. I was also working at the Royal Academy on their architecture programme. My study was from an historian perspective and not very artistic
