Flowering Transition

Longer vase life; better smell; more saturated colour; available all year round; cheaper; controlled stem sizes for easier harvesting; shipping tolerant; packing-efficient floral structures – these are just some of our demands of flowers. Flowers have been taken over, redesigned and reengineered by retailers, regulators, and customers for their own needs. Meanwhile, industrial flower farming has serious environmental impact:
intensive use of fossil fuels and water, and often-unregulated pesticides or herbicides, put pressure on local resources, ecosystems and communities dependent on growing food.

Flowering Transition by Marcin Rusak, MA Design Products, speculates on the future of genetics across this industry. It imagines scenarios where flower waste is designed to be reused for short-lived, personal, decorative textiles; a perishable vase reflects the short life of today’s products; and a fragrance test enables us to weigh up our own sensuous preferences – colour versus smell. By imagining where this path could lead, Flowering Transition aims to incorporate all of the requirements that we have for flowers while questioning if this is really what we want them to be.
