Electronic Skin Nanopatches for Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring

Dr Stephen Wang as Principal Investigator at the Royal Collage of Art is taking the leading role in the sector of design innovation and product development to form a multidisciplinary research team together with nanotechnologist (CI Cheng), data scientist (CI Webb), clinical scientists (CIs Tonkin, B Wang) and industrial partners. This team will together undertake systematic research activities to generate new technologies and new knowledge/understanding, critical for moving invention in wearable technology forward. 

Built upon Monash electronic skin technology platform with the world thinnest gold nanowires, this project aims to develop soft, thin, wearable and non-invasive heart health monitors allowing for continuously monitoring blood pressures anytime anywhere. The project will bring together nanotechnologist, electrical engineers, clinicians, information technologist and innovation design engineering disciplines. We will collaborate to develop to develop blood pressure correlation algorithm and evaluate the sensing performances, which will create new knowledge and technologies paving the way towards future commercialisation. This will contribute to the growth of UK/Australian MedTech industries as competitive global leaders in wearable technology industries.

This project aims to translate the disruptive electronic skin technologies into potential high-value medical device products, by performing industrially relevant research to fill the gap before moving the next stage towards commercialisation. This will stimulate the growth of Australian MedTech industries by enhancing their innovation level and place them in a highly competitive position in the rising wearable technology industry.

To move exciting Monash e-skin wearable blood preasure technologies out of research lab, the goal is to fill the gap between lab invention and commercial products. The ARC linkage project scheme suits very well this project to fill the current translational research gap. The soft Monash e-skin technology is innovative disruptive technologies, which can tick all the boxes in downstream high-value chains in future wearable MedTech products. However, sensitivity, durability, and reliability of e-skin sensing devices need to be systematically evaluated with demographic figures. The relationships between waveforms and BP need to be established, and an efficient data-processing algorithm is required. Industrial inputs and multidisciplinary collaboration is in urgent need.
