How Can Sustainable Design Nurture Local Enterprise?
The long-term goal of the research is to create an international network of Blueprint Exchange studios which share resources and create new works in the digital public space through participatory art and design (Sen et al., 2009; 8-23).
Its medium-term aim is to set up the first Blueprint Exchange studio as a centre for sustainable design research. This will generate worthwhile ideas through action research and design thinking using tools selected from 50 Ways of Working Sustainably (Chapman et al., 2012) and a process of projection adapted from Chow and Jonas (2010:12).
The short-term aim is a small-scale Participatory Action Research project (Torbert, in Reason and Bradley, 2006: 207-218) designed to bring together a group of entrepreneurs from within the Blueprint Exchange network. The purpose of this is to determine the human and technical resources needed to set up a sustainable design research studio and to develop tools and artefacts to provoke knowledge transfer.

Robert Pulley’s research explores how we might provide valuable social and economic opportunities through collaborating with local people in an increasingly unequal, globalised world.
The research territory of his supervisors, Ashley Hall and Clare Brass, includes cultural exchange mediated through co-designing and making across continents, sustainable design practice, social enterprise and design education.
He is delighted to be part of the RCA dream factory once again after more than 30 years in the wilderness.
