Birmingham City University Student Project

October – December 2017

In partnership with Public Health Northern Ireland, the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design introduced students at Birmingham City University’s Visual Communication (Graphics) to the principles of Co-design and Inclusive Design. 

Twenty-eight students submitted projects that were judged by a panel from the Helen Hamlyn Centre and Public Health Northern Ireland. Each project was judged based on the appropriateness of the audience, message, tone of voice and the quality of the research.

The winning projects were:

Yellow Dot of Hope
Yellow Dot of Hope

Jinya Gao – Yellow Dot of Hope
An animation where a dot represents an individual who may be feeling suicidal. The animation is aimed at teenagers and would be shown on social media sites.

Shite Tight
Shite Tite

James Hemming – Shite Tight
An animation aimed at men, particularly sporty men who may need extra support to ‘open up’ and discuss their feelings. The animation uses slang words and local sportsmen to help men openly ask their friends if they are okay.

Emotions Scrapbook

Charlotte Lowe – Emotions Scrapbook
A scrapbook, designed for children 8-12 years old, to discuss their emotions openly. The interactive book and associated guide helps parents and guardians to navigate their children’s emotions. The book highlights ‘red flags’ and points to discuss more as well as giving children an outlet to express themselves.

Dylan Roberts – Flourish
A social media campaign and ‘flower walk’ designed to support females supporting men who may be feeling suicidal. The walk would help to raise money and awareness and the social media campaign would direct people to help loved ones.

Wake Up Cup

Sibel Sensoy – Wake-Up Cup
A physical marketing campaign tackling people who may be feeling suicidal and be experiencing insomnia-like symptoms. These individuals are known to use coffee as a way to function. The cups prompt you to ask and explore the reasons why someone might be drinking coffee.

The projects are currently being developed by the students and members of the Helen Hamlyn Centre team with the view to being produced in the next few years.
