SYMBIONT

Andriana Faidra Nassou, Global Innovation Design

Winner: IA Interior Architects Award for Work Futures
Joint Winner:  Scott Brownrigg Design Award for Inclusive Spaces

SYMBIONT is a living structure that reduces the CO2 levels in indoor working spaces by fostering the growth of microalgae. The air quality in the working space is usually eight times more noxious than the air of a congested city-centre intersection, consequently negatively affecting our health and productivity. Through photosynthesis, microalgae feed on the CO2 we exhale and in return release oxygen, an essential element to our wellbeing. In a future where 90% of the population is going to live in urban centres, SYMBIONT offers a sustainable solution that paves the way towards an era of bio-inspired systems.

Judge's comment:

“Taking biophillic design to another level - this project addresses issues of wellness, sustainability and productivity in the workplace. Embodied in an engaging and scaleable product, Symbiont makes us feel better by reducing CO2 levels in indoor working spaces.”
Tim Hardingham, IA Interior Architects
