RCA-IIS Tokyo Design Lab

The RCA-IIS Tokyo Design Lab is a research collaboration between the RCA and the Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), a research institute of the University of Tokyo.

The Lab was launched in December 2016 to bring together scientists, engineers and creative minds and to develop innovative applications from scientific discoveries. It serves as a melting pot for the exchange of ideas between academia, industry and government institutions. The Lab is also a career launchpad for RCA graduates who want to explore how a fusion between science, engineering, technology and the arts facilitates innovation.

the University of Tokyo is dedicated to incorporating design thinking and creativity into a strong research and technology culture and is working with the RCA to develop this.

The Lab structure comprises small and agile teams and research project groups - 'MicroLabs'. This agile approach allows exploration in multidisciplinary collaborations, quickly prototyping ideas and fully exploiting the benefits of the Lab's multicultural environment.

The Lab is now expanding its activities and offers public technology exhibitions, academic symposia and education and training events on design-driven innovation, technology predictions and creativity.
