Trine Lindegaard Fashions
A contemporary menswear-clothing brand
Trine Lindegaard, Wates Fellow 2013
Trine has developed a contemporary menswear-clothing brand which reflects her social values and desire to make a difference to the lives of others. Some of her designs have been created by prisoners as part of their rehabilitation process and Trine sources her materials from a small Ghanaian weaving family business (Venusmerc) thus helping to keep traditional African crafts alive.
For prisoners, some key benefits of this collaboration have been identified as the creative stimulation and connection to the outside world this work gives them and also an improved confidence in their abilities helping them to grow on a personal level and potentially stop re-offending.
Venusmerc produces Kente material – a traditional Ghanaian dress form. Some key benefits for these weavers are the regular income this work provides, the increase in awareness of this fading Ghanaian weaving craft to a worldwide, fashion-based audience and, ultimately, support in rebuilding a traditional family business whilst passing on skills to a new generation through apprenticeships.
