Lumber Lock Connectors
Novel fitting for wooden structures
Ben Parton, James Dyson Fellow 2011
A fixing that enables you to fit a square peg in a round hole.
The Lumber Lock is a novel fixing that offers furniture manufacturers, cabinet makers and DIY enthusiasts a very simple and effective way to joint a timber structure. A Lumber Lock joint produces a perfectly rigid but also adjustable and easy to disassemble.
The product consists of two identical moulded parts that work together to securely connect a piece of wood with a circular hole to a square section length of timber. The need for this product arises from a fresh look at the materials and techniques employed in wood-working. A round hole is simple to create using a hole-saw but a rectangular section requires more time-consuming methods.
In the opposite sense, square section timber is simply sawn and planed with minimum waste, whereas a circular section dowel is expensive and inefficient use of material. Lumber Lock makes use of readily available and cost effective materials to quickly produce bespoke furniture.
Anyone who needs to make functional furniture a certain size or to fit a specific space, out of readily available, good value materials will see advantages when using this product.
If supplied with pre-drilled panels, anyone who wants a simple adjustable system that can be put together with out the need for tools. This makes it ideal for incorporating in flat pack furniture designs.
During development testing of the product has shown that it is capable of holding weight, suitable for bookcases, even without screws or other fittings. As the timber is not damaged or disfigured by screws or nail holes when using Lumber Lock it can then be re-used if required.
The product is applicable to a range of uses and therefore has a large potential n the very competitive markets of furniture and DIY. To further increase the appeal to end-users it is anticipated to offer a range of products. This will include cost-effective injection moulded clips and elegant precision die-cast components with a high quality finish for top of the range products.
